Community involvement plays a crucial role in enhancing societal well-being. During the month of April, designated as National Volunteer Month, individuals are encouraged to contribute positively to their local environments. Across the United States, numerous organizations rely heavily on volunteers to fulfill their missions, and one such group is the Community Food Bank of New Jersey (CFBNJ). Partnering with CBS News New York, this organization works tirelessly throughout the year to combat hunger and ensure food security within New Jersey.
Volunteer efforts significantly bolster the capabilities of charitable groups. Last year, CFBNJ benefited from over 90,000 hours of volunteer service, equating to the efforts of 43 full-time employees. These dedicated individuals engage in various tasks, ranging from sorting donated items to preparing meals for seniors. Today, CBS News New York joins CFBNJ for an annual event known as the "pack-a-thon" in Hillside, where participants assemble meals while raising funds for the cause. Additionally, later in the year, they will collaborate again during the Thanksgiving turkey drive.
Engaging in volunteer work fosters a sense of unity and purpose within communities. Opportunities to assist are available year-round at CFBNJ's warehouses and external locations. Currently, there is a particular need for assistance at the Garfield Unity Pantry, located on Midland Ave. in Garfield. Volunteers are primarily required on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays to manage pantry operations, handle deliveries, and support community members in selecting necessary supplies. Those interested can register online via the organization’s events calendar, which offers flexibility in choosing specific engagements based on availability.
Participating in volunteer activities not only aids those in need but also strengthens the bonds among community members. Through collaboration and shared goals, individuals can make a tangible difference in the lives of others. Such initiatives exemplify the power of collective action and highlight the importance of sustained commitment to social welfare. By coming together, communities can address pressing issues like hunger and create a more equitable society for all.
